Halloween is an excuse for me to take senior pictures with my models and turn it into fashion photography. This is a fun photo session for our senior models who love dressing up and modeling for the camera. These girls arrive at our studio in Greenwood South Carolina excited for hair and make-up, but especially about what they’ll be wearing. Fashion Photography, walking the runway, posing for the camera makes senior pictures all the more fun on Halloween.
Preparing for the Session
Rule number one, do not straighten your hair. We ask everyone to arrive with their hair in curlers and we style according to the look we are going for. Hair that has been straightened will not curl, or if it does the curls fall out almost immediately. We add additional volume by curling, teasing, or with extra long locks, we may secure it with fashion clips. Make-up is important and we want everyone feeling beautiful. At Holubek Photography we offer professional make-up, but for these portrait session, allow the girls to do their own makeup and then we adjust as necessary.
These Amazing Dresses
The dresses are a combination of bodysuits and beautiful fabrics. Several months prior the shoot I purchased several bodysuits from Forever 21 to use as the bodice of the dress. It’s important to keep current with the trends and my favorite go to stores for trendy tops are Forever 21 and H&M. From here there are visits to JoAnn Fabrics, Hobby Lobby and several online fabric sources. We wrap, clip, pin, and sew girls into these amazing looks, turn on the fans and start coaching.
The Fashion Photography Session
The key is confidence. It’s hard for the senior model to imagine in her head how the fabric is blowing and how amazing she looks, so I spend every second reinforcing how beautiful she is, and how I see the scene in my head. You’re on a mountain, the wind is blowing (my Vornado fan), relax your arms, let them fall with the wind, look down your shoulder, I never shut up. It doesn’t take long to see the transformation happen, the model begins to believe in herself, she’s confident and it shows.
This is the last year we are doing this for Halloween – I love it so much we planning to add it to our Beauty Portrait sessions coming soon. Our senior models love it, their mother’s love it and the images make the most beautiful wall portraits you’ve ever seen. Maybe it’s like a Disney princess story, a fairy tale, dream, all of the above, which ever it’s beautiful, soft, elegant and something we love.
